Shirt Box Fundraiser Nets $8K for Prostate Cancer Awareness
More than 200 people celebrated at The Shirt Box on Sept. 22, donating generously to support men’s health. The event celebrated 30 years of business for the men’s fashion boutique.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our customers and friends,” said Ron Elkus, Shirt Box founder and co-owner with Rod Brown. “Our mission has always been a celebration of men, and our anniversary was a great opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has supported us for 30 years. We wanted to show our gratitude by helping ensure the health and wellness of our community.”
The event raised $8,000 for Michigan Institute of Urology (MIU) Run for the Ribbon, a non-profit effort to provide treatment and education about prostate health screenings. MIU’s Dr. Michael Lutz, a partner in the southeast Michigan practice, spoke at the event, as did Jeff Zaslow, a Wall Street Journal reporter, author and Shirt Box shopper, along with FOX 2 anchor Huel Perkins, also a Shirt Box shopper.
The fundraiser was made possible by donations from local businesses and individuals, including Star Trax, Schakolad Birmingham Chocolate, Jack Detroit Magazine, Beans & Cornbread, National Coney Island, Tomatoes APizza, Just Baked, Uptown Catering & Deli, Biggby Coffee, Honey Tree, Vineyards Deli, Hurricane Grill & Wings and Preferred Underwriters.
“Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin malignancy and second leading cause of death in men,” Lutz said. “Our goal is to make sure nobody dies from this disease.”
“Our focus has always been helping men look and feel their best,” Elkus said. “We partnered with MIU so that our anniversary was a celebration of life for our customers.”
