5 Things You Should Know Today - April 5, 2012
Churches in Farmington and Farmington Hills hold solemn observances today in preparation for Easter.
As we head into the weekend, Christians and Jews prepare for major holidays, and some of the related events are on our calendar. Here's what else you should know today:
1. The weather
It'll be a cool and sunny day, with a high around 49 and a freeze warning in effect tonight. The National Weather Service predicts a low of 29 and winds gusting above 20 miles per hour today and tonight.
2. Maundy Thursday
A number of Christian churches in Farmington and Farmington Hills are holding services today to commemorate the "Last Supper", a Passover meal Jesus shared with his disciples the night before his crucifixion. This year, Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, begins at sundown on Friday. Find a list of Maundy Thursday observances on our Events calendar.
The Farmington Rotary Club raffle continues today with another drawing at 9 p.m. for a jackpot that grows with each passing week. Pick up $1 tickets at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington, where the drawing will be held, or from any Rotary club member.
4. Look ahead: Main Library computers off-line Friday
A computer system upgrade will keep the public computers unavailable until late afternoon Friday. Nothing else at the library is affected, and WiFi (wireless) and remote access will be available the entire day. You can still use the public computers at the Farmington branch as well.
5. Look ahead: Relay for Life Fundraiser
American Legion Post 346 will host a spaghetti dinner Friday, 5 p.m.-7 p.m., to raise funds in honor of Dawn Lis Homer's valiant fight against cancer. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Cost is $7, or $4 for children under 13, and RSVPs are required.
