5 Things You Should Know Today - Aug. 1, 2012

Farmington Hills Fire Dept. offers a meeting tonight for anyone interested in becoming a paid, on-call firefighter.

Ever wanted to pour gallons of water onto a burning building? You can learn more today about joining the Farmington Hills Fire Dept. Here's what else you should know:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts a sunny summer day, with a high around 84 and a low tonight in the mid-60s.

2. Paid on-call firefighter meeting

The Farmington Hills Fire Dept. is looking for a few good firefighters. Learn more about these positions and requirements for applying today, 7 p.m., at the Costick Center. Can't be there? Call 248-871-2800.

3. Cat Rescue shoe drive

Today is the last day to donate new or gently worn shoes to benefit Backdoor Friends Cat Rescue. They accept men's, women's, and children's family footwear; no skates, heavy winter or ski boots, big furry slippers or shoes with holes. Drop off donations at Backdoor Friends Cat Shoppe on Grand River.

4. Look ahead: Full Moon Friday Night Hike

Bring the family (children ages 5 and older) for a night-time walk in Heritage Park. Meet at the City of Farmington Hills Nature Discovery Center Friday at 9 p.m., cost is $3 per person and registration is required. Call 248-477-7735.

5. Look ahead: Paws in the Hills dog park orientation

There's another orientation session Saturday at the Costick Center for dog owners who wish to use the new dog park on Shiwassee west of 9 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. Space is limited, and registration is required. Call 248-473-1800 to reserve your spot for the noon meeting.
