5 Things You Should Know Today - Aug. 27, 2012

Enjoy a splashing good time at Heritage Park in Farmington Hills tonight.

 

The City of Farmington Hills has another family-friendly event planned this evening, with lots of fun, food and a special movie showing under the stars. 

Here's what else you should know: 

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts storms will move through the area today, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in some areas. The rain is expected to move out by evening. Today's high is expected to fall in the low 80s and tonight's low, around 60. 

2. Splash Bash in Heritage Park

Enjoy the splash pad, bouncer, games, Nature Center tours, trail hikes, and more today, during this free event starting at 6 p.m. Dinner will be available for a nominal fee, and the evening will wrap up with the movie “The Smurfs” shown in the park starting at 8 p.m. To learn more, call 248-473-1800.

3. Farmington Hills city council meets

Today at 7:30 p.m., officials will take up a controversial proposed ordinance that affects the use of bows within city limits. The issue came to the fore late last year, after residents reported seeing deer injured by arrows wandering through neighborhoods on the city's south side. The meeting will be held at city hall; a copy of the agenda, which includes a draft of the proposed ordinance is attached to this post. 

4. Look ahead: The Ride of Your Life

Join John Ricco, author of The Ride of Your Life: Fighting Cancer with Attitude, Tuesday at the Costick Center for a free discussion of his book and the positive attitude tools he promotes. The discussion begins at 10:30 a.m.

5. Look ahead: Healthy Lunches and After-School Snacks

Busch's Fresh Food Market and Botsford Hospital team up on Wednesday this free workshop, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at Busch's. Kids 8-13 will get tips and valuable information on diet and nutrition, an aisle tour, tasty samples and more. Registration is required; call 248-427-7400 or stop by Busch's, 24445 Drake Rd., Farmington Hills.
