5 Things You Should Know Today - July 26, 2012
The planning commission tonight considers a proposal for a drive-in restaurant on Haggerty in Farmington Hills.
What could you do with 60 percent of $9,000? Two local civic groups want to give you the chance to find out. Here's what else you should know today:
1. The weather
Temperatures are expected to climb back into the 90s today, with a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms with winds gusting to 20 miles per hour, mainly after 1 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts a low tonight around 68.
2. Farmington Hills planning commission
Tonight at city hall, the commission will consider a proposed split from one lot to three at the northeast corner of Drake and Grand River, and a proposed drive-in restaurant at 21122 Haggerty Road. The complete agenda for their 7 p.m. meeting is posted on the City of Farmington Hills website.
3. Queen of Hearts jackpot at $9,000
This fundraising raffle gets more interesting each week as the jackpot grows. Buy a $1 ticket from a Farmington Rotary or Xemplar Club member or at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington. If your ticket is drawn, you'll be asked to pick a number that corresponds with a numbered envelope. If the envelope contains the queen of hearts, you take home 60 percent of the pot. If not, you'll receive a gift card from the restaurant. The drawing is at 9 p.m. today.
4. Look ahead: Rhythmz in Riley Park
Friday's concert features Billy Mack and the Juke Joint Johnnies. They'll keep the dance floor packed with boppers, rockers, two-steppers and swing-dancers alike. This free event begins at 7 p.m.; rain location is First United Methodist Church, located across from the park on Grand River.
5. Look ahead: Free family campfire
Stop by the fire ring in front of the Nature Discovery Center at Heritage Park on Friday at 7 p.m. The event is free, although there is a $1 charge to make a s'more. Learn more about this and other Nature Center events by call 248-477-1135.
