Bring the Kids to the Old Winery Market in Farmington
Look for activities inside and outside the building, and pick up information about future events.
There's a lot going on at the Old Winery Farmers Market in Farmington today, so we thought we'd give you a list of things to look for as you head over to the Old Winery/Powerhouse building on Grand River, just west of Orchard Lake Rd.:
Children's Day
A wealth of fun for children begins at 10 a.m., as a Farmington Public Safety fire truck will be parked outside the market. Kids can explore the truck and talk to public safety officers until noon.
Inside, the Farmington Community Library will host a story hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and a representative from the Farmington Hills Nature Discovery Center will help kids make nature rubbings of leaves and animal tracks from 10 a.m. until noon. A balloon artist, face painter and the Sun, Water, and Seeds 4-H Club will be on-site during the day.
Even the market basket, for which you can register as you walk in the door, has a children's theme.
Vendors
More than 30 vendors are expected to be at the Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., representing a wide variety of Michigan-grown produce, from root vegetables to greens and more, as well as Michigan-made products. For a full list, visit theoldwinerymarket.com. The market kitchen will be serving up a menu of breakfast and lunch items.
Homemade from Scratch Pie Contest
There's still time to turn in your entry for this annual contest. Contestants must send a copy of their recipe, along with their full name and contact information, to gardengate@emypeople.net, or by mail to Jean Smith, TOWFM Pie Contest, 4324 Mushroom Rd., Snover, MI 48472. You'll also find information at the market today.
Each contestant will be required to bake two pies to be presented the day of the contest. Two categories of pies will be judged: Fruit Pies (apple, cherry, peach, etc.) and Other (pecan, pumpkin, sweet potato, etc.).
Pies will be judged on appearance, crust, filling and originality. For complete rules and terms, read the contest brochure, attached as a PDF to this post.
Book Sale donations
If your book shelves are overloaded, be sure to pick up information about the market's Feb. 18 book sale, benefiting both the market and the Farmington Community Library. Book donations will be accepted through Feb. 11, but ask at the information table for details before you bring in any books.
