Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

'I Won't Text and Drive Because ...'—Tell Us Why and You Could Win

Tell us why you won't text and drive and you could win some cool prizes, including smart phone with accessories that promote safe use! Patch has partnered with AT&T to raise awareness about distracted driving.

You've no doubt glanced over at a driver next to you and see him texting.

AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign discourages the dangerous behavior. Distracted driving contributed to 5,474 traffic deaths in 2009 nationwide, and 3,986 accidents in Michigan last year.

"Our goal is to save lives," AT&T Chairman & CEO Randall Stephenson said in a release.

Patch.com in Michigan is partnering with AT&T to raise awareness about distracted driving. We are launching a series of stories and, in partnership with AT&T, are also rewarding readers who commit to not text and drive.

We want to know what stops you from texting and driving. In the comments below, finish this sentence, "I won't text and drive because ..." Maybe it's for family, a friend, a pet, or because it's the right thing to do.

Whatever your reason, tell us in the comments below and that comment will be your entry into our awareness contest beginning at 6 a.m. Sept. 24 and ending at noon Oct. 3. We will pick six winners randomly from our entries. You may enter once.

And then if you haven't already, sign this AT&T pledge promising never to text while driving.

For the contest, we'll choose six winners randomly to win one of the following prizes from AT&T, which include phones and accessories that promote safe use:

1) Motorola Atrix HD 4 G smart phone with a Motorola Atrix HD- Vehicle Navigation Dock (contract and data plan not included), valued at $449 and $39.99.

2) Sony Xperia Ion Android OS smartphone with a 4 pack of Sony Xperia SmartTags (contract and data plan not included), valued at $449.99 and $20.

3) Samsung Focus 2 4G touchscreen smartphone with Samsung Tec Tiles (contract and data plan not included), valued at $399 and $14.99.

4) Motorola H19txt, bluetooth headset, valued at $99.

5) Motorola Elite Silver, bluetooth headset, valued at $129.

6) Jabra Drive, in-car speakerphone for hands-free driving, valued at $59.

OK, now for the rules:

  • Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, tells us in comments why you don't text and drive.
  • All entries must be received by noon Wednesday, Oct. 3 Eastern Time.
  • You may enter once. If you put in more than one comment, only one will be entered into the drawing.
  • Six winners will be selected in random drawings to win one of the prizes highlighted above.

There's something wrong about pledging not to text and drive when the prizes are smart phones...the very root of the cause.

What's next? Drive sober...first prize is a year supply of Budweiser and Jack Daniels?

DJG, the phones come with accessories that promote either hands-free communication or shut off texting functions in the car. So yes, we're giving away smart phones but AT&T is giving them away with devices to help people use the smarter. Like Barbara said — you've just pledged not to text and drive, so we expect you'd use this smart phone wisely.

The problem isn't just with texting; it's with distracted driving generally. The data show that having a conversation with a person not in the car is significantly more dangerous than having one with people in the car. People in the car are aware of when you are going through bad weather or traffic. They often fall silent or may even seek to cue you into dangers. None of these things happen when you are talking on the phone with someone. Although hands-free devices are legal in MI, that doesn't make them safe or that advisable to use while driving. I agree with those who note that promoting the use of this kind of equipment counteracts or at least muddies the safe driving message you are ostensibly trying to send.

Responsibility is just that. If you win a smart phone, does that mean you would text? Then you have ALOT of growing up to do. If your boss gives you a bottle of wine for Christmas do you drink it on the way home? If your wife, or husband gives you a ne hunting rifle, do you practice shooting in the car? Get a grip. Texting is wrong, its not the phones fault, Its the fool doing it. So is talking more than long enough to say, I'm driving, call you right back, or hand the phone to your kid (if they are old enough). Cell phones are a wonderful device in this busy world to make sure our kids are safe! So to answer a phone to see if its the school, or other emergency, keeps you from having to read who it is, and IF its an NOW situation, QUICKLY say "call you back, I'm driving" and pull off the road. So Yes, Its a wonderful prize. For people with sense. But for those who love to read there text messages, go and re-read your driving manual. Besides hands on the wheel, you should always be looking ahead, to avoid the fools who are not!

@ Clare,
Can you tell me how it shuts off texting functions in the car?
I'm being dead serious.
My job is technology, and I've owned several smart phones from all different carriers and brands.
I fully understand how hands free works, my vehicle has UConnect (an absolute godsend...) but how does it shut off texting functions?

I've never seen this from ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint, on HTC, Motorola, Apple or Samsung devices.

The only way to disable texting is to put the phone down...or don't pay for the service.

I've used ear buds/hands free, bluetooth and car docks for HTC and Motorola phones.
It does not disable texting. Or emailing....or Google Search for that matter.

@ Clare. I am a technie type, and the article you posted has nothing to do with stopping texting while driving/moving.
It has everything to do with marketing and ease of payment systems via NFC.
IF they are promoting this type of product for what I'm talking about, it's not written or implied anywhere.

This is more about who you are, where you are and how to advertise to you specifically.

I will not text and drive because there are enough unpredictable actions and distractions out there on the road, and we certainly don't need to add to the pile. It used to be that when we saw another driver swerving we assumed they had been drinking. These days, it's more likely texting and driving.

According to a study by Car and Driver Magazine, they tested how long it takes to hit the brake when sober, when legally drunk at .08, when reading and e-mail, and when sending a text. The results are scary. Driving 70 miles per hour on a deserted air strip Car and Driver editor Eddie Alterman was slower and slower reacting and braking when e-mailing and texting.

The results:

Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake
Legally drunk: add 4 feet
Reading e-mail: add 36 feet
Sending a text: add 70 feet

The facts speak for themselves. I care about myself and others on the road.

I too, think the smart phone prizes undermine the whole idea of pledging not to text while driving.

Is pushing buttons on a little machine more interesting or important than REAL LIFE?

I have always been an alert and careful driver but now I see cars swerving everywhere I go. Maybe they don't value their own lives that much, but I do!

I figured out that terrorists didn't need to crash planes into buildings, they could crash cars into random targets, but we are already doing this to ourselves.

Texting at the wheel turns you into a terrorist.

And don't discount other forms of distraction. They are just as unimportant and deadly.

The point is to get people to take the pledge--for whatever reason. Prizes work, and the sponsor is AT&T, so they are giving away phones. If someone promises not to text and drive, then they get a phone. I don't think it undermines anything--we all have phones anyway--but . . .

. . . will they actually stick with it? Habits are hard to change, and whether it's your old phone or a new one, the temptation to send a quick reply may be too great.

Although, my work emails and everything else delivers to my phone, I put my phone in either my purse or car console before driving, that way I pay 100% to the road. And if my kids are in the car with me, we get to have quality time together before arriving to our destination. I do not text, I do not use a cell phone unless I am the passenger. If I am the driver
I pull off the road to answer any cell phone, and then I move on or I wait till I come to
a parking lot and send a reply. I will never text. and I dislike when people text to others and they are visiting me, that is rude. Cell phones when they first came out, a
guy was so mad at someone on the phone, he was shaking his head so hard at the
person he was talking to that he crossed the double yellow line and I had my hand on
the horn and that didn't stop him. I ended up jumping the curb before he realized he
was on the wrong side of the road. I met some police and told them but I couldn't turn around to get his license or I would have gone to court with him. Pull off the road
if you need to answer the phone or text. It is enough that we have drivers that drive to fast just to make it to the same light I do.

I was actually rear ended by a woman who was texting while driving with my teenage daughter in the car. Ironically, I am very happy this happened to us. The accident was minor, nobody was hurt, and it taught a lesson to the driver along with my newly driving teen. She was visibly shaken and now knows the repercussions first hand of what happens when full attention is not on the road.

I think we should all take a vow to never text and drive...could you possible write one up and anyone that would like to have their family read and sign could do that! I love life, whether it is my life, my children, or anyone else's family member on the road being hurt or killed, its a complete waste of life, and it not just the person hurt or injured that suffers, its a snow ball effect, so many lives are changed by one senseless act. Please do not text and drive! I say this to my kids everyday when they walk out of the house.

The use of a mobile phone while driving, either texting or talking, is VERY DANGEROUS to all people on the road. Regardless of hands free devices. JUST DRIVE. When will the law makers outlaw mobile devices in a moving vehicle. The question is would you feel comfortable having surgery while the surgeon is talking on a HANDSFREE or not phone?

I pledge to just drive when I'm driving rather than drive and...

Talk on my phone without hands-free,
Text,
Apply makeup,
Eat my breakfast, lunch, dinner,
Read a book (yes, I see this regularly on Woodward Ave),
Scream at and reach for the kids in the back seat,
Drive recklessly on my way to work because I consistently fail to manage my own time effective so I'll transfer responsibility to pedestrians and other drivers,
Reach into backseat or passenger seat to pick up my dropped cigarette lighter / coffee mug / soda can,
Smoke / eat / apply make up at the same time while reaching for my cell phone,
Not look right for pedestrians when entering busy streets (i.e. Woodward),
Send emails from my laptop, and lastly,
Change my clothes.

Within the confines of our mobile bubbles, we are apt to do almost anything but drive.

Thanks Patch for inviting this conversation.

I won't text and drive (or talk and drive) because it's dangerous and stupid. In fact, it is even more dangerous and stupid than driving while intoxicated, which I don't do, either. Not a day goes by that I don't encounter a near miss because of someone occupied on their phone; I have no intention of being the cause of injury or death to myself or someone else.

I won't text and drive because I am a watcher and a listener. In August of this year my brother-in-law had 2 car accidents within 1/2 hour. He wasn't texting, talking on the phone or using a computer. He wasn't drunk or on any drugs. My brother-in-law had a "Stroke". There was no intent to be irresponsible. When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle and you already know you are going to text someone you have ventured into irresponsible and criminal behavior. In criminal court they would call that pre-meditated, I just call it "Stupid". I am a watcher-I watch what is going on in the cars that I pass going down the street, I have averaged things out and I can tell you that just where I drive at least 3 out of every 5 drivers are either texting, talking on the phone, on a laptop, eating or heck I have even seen drivers reading a newspaper. I also listen to what is said about accidents and deaths while doing these alternatives to watching the road. You may think you can do it all and no one will get hurt, "Grow Up". They called my brother-in law's issues, medical accidents, he lost his license for 6 months while he recuperates and he understands. He is grateful that he is alive and that no one else got hurt. No one will call what happens when "You" deliberately text, talk ect., an accident. They will call it "Negligence", and depending on the outcome you may not like where you reside for the next few years. I'm not going to be stupid, care to join me?

How scary for your brother. Glad that one ended relatively OK.

When I'm waiting at a red light, I pass the time by counting people doing distracting things while driving ... he's on the phone, she's digging through her purse, OK that person is actually driving ... she's definitely speeding while texting AND swerving ...

Is it just me, or has the distracted driving thing become worse in the last decade? Are cellphones the "gateway drug" to distracted driving, or have those people simply developed bad habits that invite all forms of distraction?

It scares me that so many people seem to think it's perfectly normal and acceptable to "multitask" that way. I wish they could realize that multitasking means your brain is much less efficient, having to switch gears so often. Not dangerous while sitting at your desk in your office ... but in a car, when a few seconds could make a big difference, it could result in disaster.

I will not text and drive for I would not want my grandkids 2 and 3 to grow up like my kids did not knowing what a Grandma or Grandpa is. Even if my life was spared, it would be a selfish act that risks harming others or killing them. Even if was just a fender bender where no one was hurt, that selfish act now causes someone else the annoyance of dealing with getting their car fixed and everything else that goes on when your the cause of an accident and you inconvenience someone elses life for your own convenience.

I don't text and drive because there is nothing in a text that could possibly be important enough for me to risk my life or the lives of you and your loved ones. Seriously. The only time a text is life-altering is when a driver decides to read and respond while driving...then a text of no substance gains great importance because it resulted in injury or death. We have choices to make every time we get behind the wheel. Take back control and shut your phone off while you are driving.

Driving a car needs your complete and undivided attention. Many people in today's society of faster communication at the click of a "send" button think that texting, cell phone conversations, putting make-up on with the use of their rear view mirror and eating (imagine that!) can be done while driving.

To be a safe driver, one must be always looking ahead, beside and behind your vehicle. The traffic patterns are always changing. There are many drivers who make quick lane changes without signals or abruptly cut each other off without room between the cars. If I weren't always alert, I would be in many accidents.

I have seen many deaths when individuals (teens, adults, parents) decided to text or phone while driving. I have heard of people seriously injured when trying to do other activities at the wheel of a car. When driving at 70+mph in a car, I think it is a proper request to ask people to pay attention to where they are going. Either they will die or they will get killed due to this cheap distraction. I know that I love everyone that I meet and would not want to die or take someone else's life away. There is no going back!

I don't have an iphone; not because they are evil but because I do enough emaling on the internet without such a device outside my home or office. I might consider getting a smart phone later but I enjoy my llife without one.

I don't text and drive in order to live life to it's fullest! There have been endless studies conducted proving that multitasking is ineffective for male or female, performing any function. Being 'present' at whatever you are doing can only effectively be done by performing one function at a time. Thus, 'living' in the moment fully.
That being said, any call or text can wait until you are safely to the side of the road so you can give the person who is contacting you your full attention to whatever the situation is at hand.
Just my 2 cents, but is makes life less stressful and more fun when you can effectively whatever is at hand...in the moment.

I will not text and drive because when I observe other drivers on the road you can always pick out the ones that are preoccupied with their phone. They drive too slow then speed up, cross the lines, almost rear-end the people infront of them. If I were to cause and accident because of texting it would haunt me for the rest of my life. We as a society functioned quite well without texting and should keep texting off the road.. A T&T should provide an instant message to those texting you that you are driving and will respond later. That way you can keep your eyes on the road where they should be!

Kidcat24,

You are wrong in the way that so many liberals are wrong. There once was a very small program designed to provide phone service to those living in the most remote area's, essentially a balance to the monopoly held by AT&T that required them (with some taxpayer money) to run phone lines to unprofitable locations. You might remember seeing a "Universal Access Fee" on your phone bill. Unfortunately, all government programs grow beyond their original budget and scope and now its a welfare plan. If you remember the Reagan years, I don't know your age, cell phones were very new, very expensive and not a part of the program.

Certainly wasteful government spending is not a uniquely Democratic thing, but when you add in the recent viral video, it's an easy joke that's more true than false.

I don’t text and drive because a few years ago I took a “no texting and driving” pledge thru an Oprah Winfrey campaign, and I took that pledge seriously. Since that time and continuing to date, I do not text and drive. I will again take the AT&T pledge that I won’t text and driving which will be a recommitment for me NOT to text and drive. Seeing all of the fatalities as a result of someone texting and driving and the devastation and grief from survivors involved in “text-n-drive” accidents have made me further realize the importance of driver safety. While I, of course, have not been involved in any text-n-drive accidents, I have witnessed several near misses because of someone texting and driving.

Not only does texting and driving cause accidents, it also impedes the flow of traffic. I was driving down the freeway at the flow of traffic when all of a sudden the traffic slows almost to a complete stop. When I got close to what I had assumed would be an accident site, I noticed a young driver in the middle lane CLEARLY texting and driving. This person’s head was literally bowed all the way down looking at her phone and her car was idly moving. Can you believe that this is what caused the back-up and could possibly have caused an accident?

Death or catastrophic injury is definitely not worth a text message that is being read or being sent. This is exactly why I do not text and drive.

I love the uninformed liberal. I think the very website you're posting on has the article on the clean alcohol and drug test for L. and his driver, and the video mentioned by Haulin.

Obama voter? I think so.

as heavy as the traffic has been on hall road, i was taking my son to work, and had the little 3 year old in the back seat. These three idiots, coming from every every direction (one out of the shopping plaza right across Lakeside, one from the left lane and one right behind me... all with phones in their hands, or at their ears.... and they drove like idiots. Sitting half way into my lane, not paying attention to other traffic.... clogging the whole area making traffic even worse. My kids life is more important than txting and looking like a complete idiot and making it dangerous for me being out there.

I don't text and drive because if I can't drive from point A to point B without texting, there's a problem.

How stupid the average person is,

Then Realize that half are stupider then that.

I agree, but we all feel better having taken the pledge. It's similar to clicking on "Like" on facebook for a page against child abuse. As soon as the abusers see that child abuse will certainly end.

Dear Editor, time to end this comment sections since it has become of subject. The political attacks are uncalled for and ignorant at best. Please keep Patch legitimate and end this thread.

Time for Patch to have some opinion blogs on politics, since that is what is going on and many certainly have an opinion on the candidates.

We can all agree that texting and driving is a bad idea. Why discuss it further?

Thank you Clare. Also, mobile phone use wether talking or texting are equally distracting and dangerous. I'm suprised that the auto company's are still piling in technology that support DANGEROUS DRIVING. Where is Lansing to outlaw the use of mobile phones while driving. Where is MADD?????? I guess not enough people have died yet. SAD!

Duke

History has been there and done that about tech stuff and cars. In the 1930's , they almost banned radios as being too distracting, ie taking your eyes off the road to adjust the volume etc.

With 'hands off ' technology, should be no problem now.
Regarding texting, soon we will have windshield level , in front, visual overlays of the text, like our military already has, and verbal texting as well. You see it every day on the 'mute' button script. All computer generated. Let technology solve the text issue. Keep politicians away from what they don't understand.

I won't text and drive because I have to understand a societal rule -- that because there are people who CAN'T perform that action without seriously getting someone hurt, no one should. I know I would be fine to text and drive at certain times but I still will NOT -- Because I know that my mother in law shouldn't! It's example, and it's everyone playing by the rules to make a better society.
