Farmington Schools Plan For Free Field Trips to the DIA

Millage passes in primary elections and art lovers and students benefit.

On Tuesday, Oakland County residents an Art Institute Authority millage that is reported to cost residents $15 a year on a house worth $150,000. In return for this investment, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will provide free, unlimited general admission for residents and free field trips for students.

Jenny Angell, DIA special programs coordinator, said several schools from the Farmington Public Schools district visited the institute last year.

“Last year, we had nine schools,” she said. “Some schools do come multiple times, but there were nine total unique schools that came to visit.”

That was 750 people, including students, chaperones and teachers, she said.

“School field trips are going to be free,” she said. “And we are working on increasing programming.”

Diane Bauman, director of schools and community relations for the Farmington Public Schools district, said there hasn’t been time to discuss what new possibilities this means for the schools.

“But we’re very excited that it passed,” she said. “And for the opportunity that it offers our students.”

Bauman said she will have a conversation with the principals in the fall to determine any future plans.

In Farmington Hills, 11,367 people voted yes for the millage and 4,196 voted no. In Farmington, 1,639 voted yes and 547 voted no. The millage passed in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
