Farmington Produces 3 All-State Wrestlers
Farmington’s Immanuel Govantes finishes in fourth place, North Farmington’s Kevin Miller finishes in fifth place and Harrison’s Andrew Fialka finishes in seventh; all three athletes earn All-State status.
AUBURN HILLS - Farmington area wrestlers all found All-State success at The Palace of Auburn Hills in the MHSAA individual wrestling finals over the weekend.
Wrestlers who placed in the top eight of each division achieved all-state status. Each area high school sent a wrestler to the podium on Saturday night for a medal.
North Farmington senior Kevin Miller finished in fifth place in the 189 pound weight class with win over Walled Lake Central's Charles Sovel on a 6-3 decision.
Miller started the tournament off strong with wins over Salem’s Jacob McCabe and Dakota Smith’s Grand Haven. He hit a road block when he locked up with his weight class’ eventual state title winner Kevin Beazley from Detroit Catholic Central.
Beazley sent Miller to the consolation bracket with on a 15-7 decision.
In the consolation semifinals, Miller lost to Battle Creek Lakeview junior Rodney Harvey on a 4-3 decision in overtime. Miller wasn't able to score a takedown match.
Farmington junior Immanuel Govantes finally ran out of moves in the 125 pound consolation finals.
In overtime, Detroit Catholic Central senior T.J. Fagan earned a quick two points by getting Govantes on his back. Fagan won on a 6-4 decision to finish third while Govantes finished fourth.
After a loss in the quarterfinals to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central’s Mitch Hrnyak dropped him down to the consolation bracket, Govantes pinned three straight opponents to get to the finals.
He stunned Davison sophomore Dominic Russ in their consolation semifinals match.
Down 11-2 in the third round, he put Russ on his back and locked him up for a pin with 1:18 on the clock. After the match, he joked the move he used was called the 'Cuban sandwich.' Whatever it was; it worked.
"I had to pull something out of my sleeve, I was definitely going to lose," he said.
Harrison junior Andrew Fialka also wrestled in the 125 pound weight class. He pinned Plymouth’s Chase Kallil in the third round of their seventh place match on Saturday.
Fialka lost his opening round bout to Battle Creek Lakeview wrestler Jesse Sum on a 9-6 decision, but dropped down to the consolation bracket and won three of his four matches.
His match against Rochester Adams junior Alex Potoniec on Friday morning helped build his confidence. He scored early and often in the match on his way to an 11-5 win.
"Soon as he hit a takedown early in the match, you could see his confidence was building," Hawks coach Jim Stuef said.
Fialka ha was actually nervous going into the match because he wrestled Potoniec at the county championship and barely won the match.
"He was a little worried because at counties he won with kind of a lucky move in that match," Stuef said.
