Farmington Hills Flyers Fall To Livonia Churchill 4 - 3

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Flyers battle back to make it a nail biter.

The Farmington Hills Flyers hockey team, made up of students from North Farmington and Harrison high schools, lost a close one at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena Saturday night.

Livonia Churchill came away with the win, beating the Flyers 4 to 3 on the Flyers home ice.

Livonia opened the scoring in the first period on an even strength goal beating Flyer Goalie Hunter Myers (29) at 4:36. The goal was scored by Nick Missiak (18) with assists going to Brad Milkus (11) and Riley Brown (16). Although the Chargers seemed to have a bit more jump and often carried the play during the first period, the score remained 1-0 Livonia Churchill until 11:55 in the first.

Skating shorthanded due to a boarding penalty at 11:12, Brad Milkus (11) with a nifty assist from (22) Tommy Carey lit the lamp to give the Churchill Chargers a 2 - 0 lead.  The two teams skated to the locker room at the end of the first without changing the scoreboard.

In the second period, the Flyers made it a one-goal game, by scoring on a 5 on 3 power play goal. Although having a bit of a struggle during the first minute of their 5 on 3 advantage, Kyle Witherspoon (8) sneaked the puck by Charger goalkeeper Alec Calvaruso (33) at 2:23 of the second period. Witherspoon was assisted by Reede Burnette (6) and Thaddeus Zak (33).

Livonia Chuchill then bore down and answered the Flyers with two goals. Charger Matt Sinclair (17) with (22) Tommy Carey poked one past Flyer net minder Hunter Meyers at 5:15 of the second.  Livonia then made the score 4-1 with 29 seconds left on the clock, with a power play goal by Nick Missiak (18). Tommy Sinclair (22) and Drew Puishes (2) drew assists on the goal that saw the Chargers leave the ice and the end of the second period with a 4 - 1 lead.

Flyer head coach Ken Anderson must have had quite a pep talk with his boys between the second and third periods. Opening the third, the Flyer team had the jump in their legs that was missing in the first two stanzas. They came out of the gate on a mission, beating the Livonia Charger team to loose pucks, winning the battles in the corner and playing a bit more of a physical game.

The hard work paid off at 1:07 of the third period when Flyer (14) Eric Stans buried a nice pass from Kyle Witherspoon (8) to make the score 4 -2 Livonia. Just a minute and 16 seconds later, Stans scored his second of the night, converting a pass from Sean Devlin (9) to make it a one-goal game.

Solid goaltending, including a spectacular late-in-the-game save by Livonia net minder Alec Calvaruso, kept the score as is for the remainder of the period.

Farmington Hills pulled Myers with 1:15 left in the game and had a couple of nice opportunities, but they came up short, leaving the ice with a 4-3 loss.
