Mike Greer's photography studio in downtown Farmington hummed with conversation Sunday night, as more than 100 guests, all dressed to the nines, waited for a peek at this year's Oscar-nominated short films.

Farmington Community Library children's librarian Maria Showich-Gallup flashed a wide smile when asked about the turnout for the first-ever Red Carpet Event. She said 139 tickets were pre-sold for the fundraiser, which benefits the Farmington Friends of the Library. After enjoying appetizers at the studio, guests moved to the Farmington Civic Theater, where nominees for live action, documentary and animated short films were shown.

The event kicked off "I Geek the Library," a year-long initiative designed to raise awareness about the library and what it brings to the community. Showich-Gallup said upcoming events include a "flash mob" with Gill Elementary students.
