Nancy Leflar, right, smiles as Farmington Schools Supt. Sue Zurvalec talks about why she was chosen as this year's Senior Extraordinaire.

Kenbrook Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Melissa McDermid says the value of having senior volunteer Nancy Leflar in her classroom can't be measured.

Farmington Public Schools (FPS) honored Leflar as Senior Extraordinaire during its Senior Adult Breakfast held at the Costick Center Thursday. Each year since 2005, the district has honored a senior who gives of his or her time within the district.

McDermid said Leflar helps children who need a little extra attention, is a "fill in" partner when children work in teams and has helped with laptop computers in the classroom. But the presence of another adult in the classroom is what's most important.

"It shows the kids there are people in the community who care, and not just their teacher," she said.

Supt. Susan Zurvalec emceed the event, which included performances by the Farmington High School orchestra and concert choir. FPS staff and students from Farmington, Farmington Central, Harrison and North Farmington high schools served as "hosts" and led conversations with the seniors at each table.
