Newborn Rowan Levi Ashton was expected to arrive on New Year's Eve.

"He was four minutes late," his father, Ryan Ashton, said. But that made Rowan the first baby of 2012 at Botsford Hospital

His mother, Dr. Jordan Ashton, is a family practice resident at Botsford. She worked up until a week before delivering the couple's first son at 12:04 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2012.

The Ashtons arrived at Botsford around 5 a.m. on Dec. 31, and while things didn't go completely as expected, Jordan Ashton said, "It was an amazing experience ... It's important to just be open-minded and willing to adapt to whatever arises."

Rowan is a big boy; he weighed in at 8 lbs., 12 oz. and is 21 1/2 inches long. In addition to being the Ashtons' first child, he is the first grandchild for both Amy and Rick Lorbecki of Wisconsin, and Steven and Deloris Ashton of Minnesota.

The Ashton family will head home to Wolverine Lake on Jan. 3.

Metro Detroit's first baby of 2012 is Keveon James Butler, born to Ferndale resident Michelle Hargitt, Ferndale Patch reports. He was born at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit at 12:02 a.m. on Jan. 1.
