Larger Recycling Bins Coming to Farmington Hills

Citizen concerns over the size of new collection bins that will encourage even more recycling have led Farmington Hills officials to make a slight change in plans for their implementation.
During Monday's regular meeting, city council members approved revisions to a contract with Waste Management, Inc. that reflect a move to single-stream recycling at the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC). Some residents told officials they oppose the 96-gallon containers, which would likely have to be stored alongside homes and garages.
Authority director Mike Csapo brought samples of the wheeled, 96-gallon, 64-gallon and 35-gallon containers that will be left at city hall so residents can get a look at them. The revised contract originally designated the largest container as a standard; Csapo said residents would be free to request the smaller sizes.
"We can accommodate residents' needs," he said.
Csapo noted new standards that allow residents to recycle more items may lead them to eliminate at least one trash can. However, officials chose to make the 64-gallon bin standard, allowing residents to size up or down.
Containers will be delivered July 1, with stickers inside their hinged covers that show a list of recyclables and important contact numbers.
Originally a 4-year agreement set to expire in about a year and a half, the contract has been extended to June 3, 2022. Csapo said that allows Waste Management to amortize the cost of providing the containers at no cost to the city or residents. The move lowers the city's cost for recycling services and increases the amount of money earned from processing recyclables, he added.
While the new containers aren't yet available, residents can now add wide-mouth and agricultural plastics for curbside collection.

Great but im angry that i cant even use the large garbage cans i bought last year due to contractual issues with the garbage service not allowed to lift the heavy cans! The limit for garbage cans is 32 gallons! I. guarantee you the recycling bins will be much heavier than the trash cans! This makes no sense!

They also used the huge bins for trash, I don't know if Farmington is going to do that. If so, you won't need any of your old trash cans.

I agree with you Stephanie.....why not move toward 64 gallon can for trash and 32 gallon for recyclables since we can go up to 96 gallons or move down to 32 gallon. Waste management has the trucks with the proper equipment to lift a 32 gallon, 64 gallon or even a 96 gallon for that matter. Make the trash pick up and recyclables universal......and save everyone alot of grief....

Anyone know if they are they going to be taking back our old recycling bins, or can we still use those.. I personally don't want to have to store one of these big monsters!

KP, you can keep your old bin for other uses or you can put it in the new bin and they'll recycle it.

my relatives have these in Ohio and Florida. Most of the people have to leave them outside because they cannot fit them into their garages if they want their cars in there too. The neighborhoods are unsightly with those bins in front of the house. Where can you put them on the side of your house, on the grass? And who wants to run outside with your garbage in the wintertime? I see this as something that is going to be good for waste management and not for the residents of farmington hills. Also, even if there is enough room because you have a 2 car garage, you still have to pull your car out before you can get one of these monsters out of it. Who got paid off agreeing to this idea?

Bravo! Pleased to be part of a community where we're returning materials to the economy to make useful goods and reduce the destructive mining, transport and processing of virgin minerals. Beats the heck out of paying money to have someone bury them.

Does anyone know who we contact to get the smaller bin? I hear that they will drop off the biggest one unless you let them know you want a smaller one.

They will deliver the 64 gal bin in July but you have until Oct 1st to change the size. The city numbers are: Farmington 248-473-7250; Farmington Hills 248-871-2850; Wixom: 248-624-0141

It is July 24th and no sign of the new bins - has the city started distributing them and I am just at the end? I can't wait for the new bins as I recycle way more than I throw away!

I just called today and there is an article in the Patch. They will start delivering them on Monday in the North part and work ther way south till everyone gets one.
