Sending Mother's Day Flowers? Farmington Florists Say Order Early

If you're thinking about brightening someone's day with flowers on Mother's Day May 13, get your order in early.

Like now. 

That's advice from Nata, who works at , a Farmington shop owned by Kathy Julien. Those who wait for Friday or Saturday, she said, should remain flexible about colors and other details.

"You'll still get a beautiful arrangement," she said, adding the most popular requests this year have been for a mixture of fresh flowers, like Michigan-grown lilies and roses, in a vase.  

Anyone who plans to send flowers to someone in another city or state should make that call immediately, Nata said. And when it comes to local deliveries, keep in mind that busy florists need to schedule deliveries based on their staffing and time.

"There's just so much we can deliver with the manpower we have," she said. "You don't want your mother getting her flowers at 6 p.m. on Mother's Day." 

Josie Slavsky, who works at in downtown Farmington, said she's about to go through her first Mother's Day at the shop, but "they've been mentally preparing me for months." 

Slavsky said cut flowers are big for Mother's Day, but hanging baskets are also popular. A large display of baskets is wrapped around the front and side of the store, on the corner of a Downtown Farmington Center building off Farmington Road.

All local florists are likely working overtime this week. According to aboutflowers.com, Mother's Day accounted for a quarter of all flowers sent in the U.S. last year.
