MLK Day: What's Closed, What's Happening
City offices and schools will be closed Monday, but the library will be open for a special celebration.
While public buildings will be closed Monday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, both the Farmington Community Library Main Library and Farmington branch will be open.
Farmington Public Schools students have the day off, as do students at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge and Wayne State University's Oakland Center in Farmington Hills.
City of Farmington Hills and City of Farmington offices will be closed. Farmington city council, which usually meets on Monday night, will meet Tuesday. Trash collection is not affected.
Both the Farmington and Farmington Hills branches of the U.S. Postal Service will be closed Monday. The Farmington branch Automated Postal Center is open 24 hours a day.
Walkers will gather at 9:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Farmington Hills for the start of "A Day On, Not A Day Off", a celebration co-sponsored by the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council, Farmington Public Schools, the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills, and the Farmington Community Library. The walk ends about a third of a mile away, at the Main Library.
There, the East Middle School Choir will perform, as will Harrison High School's dance company, poet T. Miller and storyteller Rosie Chapman. Keynote speaker will be Josh White, Jr., a musician and educator, who will share the life story of his father, Josh White, a renowned singer, songwriter, guitarist and civil rights activist. Participants will have the opportunity to help with community service projects, and there will be activities for children.
