VIDEO: Hundreds Run to Raise Awareness of Child Abuse
5K run honors slain child abuse victim Dominick Calhoun at Kensington Metropark in Milford.
Hundreds of runners braved chilly Saturday morning winds to honor slain child abuse victim Dominick Calhoun in a 5K race at Kensington Metropark in Milford.
Four-year-old Dominick, of Argentine Township, was killed at the hands of his mother's ex-boyfriend. He was among more than 2,284 children in Genessee County who were abused and neglected in 2010.
The run, organized by child abuse advocacy group ChildHelp, paid tribute to Dominick and other abuse victims while raising the profile of Dominick's Law, pending legislation that would enforce harsher penalties for those who abuse children.
Rick Calhoun of Linden, Dominick's paternal grandfather, said he has received plenty of support from the community since his grandson's murder to honor Dominick's memory while helping to prevent similar incidents from happening.
"I look back and two years has gone by really fast," Calhoun said. "We're not going to stop and we don't want you guys to stop. We're committed to making sure we do something about this and save these kids and make sure we all do our part.
He said the passage of Dominick's Law would keep violent offenders in prison and away from children.
"The guy who murdered my grandson should have been in jail at the time, and they let him out," Calhoun said. "They knew he was who he was."
