Voters Should Remember Officials' Reaction to Medical Marijuana Decriminalization

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and Prosecutor Jessica Cooper wasted taxpayers' resources on raids and prosecution, Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey says in a letter to Berkley Patch.

As residents prepare to make their choices and cast their ballots for the upcoming elections, they would do well to remember how certain county elected officials reacted these past couple of years to the decriminalization of medical marijuana which was passed by overwhelming majorities of Michigan voters.  Instead of a mindful and accommodating attempt to follow the wishes of residents, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard decided to devote huge amounts of effort and resources into investigations, entrapments, raids, and arrests of local residents who attempted to follow the newly passed laws in an open and law-abiding manner.

Mayors, council members, city commissioners, local police, and planning and zoning officials in several cities had painstakingly developed methods to enable patients and caregivers to begin to provide for the use of marijuana as medicine. But our sheriff decided to use his office, time, and efforts to use every known force of law to shut down these efforts. He used helicopters, undercover narcotics agents, snarling dogs, and swat officers in full riot gear and facemasks, carrying automatic weapons to make raids. They arrested owners, nurses, receptionists, and even grandmothers who were trying to follow the new medical marijuana laws.

Lest anyone believe this criticism is partisan, Republican Sheriff Bouchard could not have carried out such raids without support from Democratic County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper. Her 1970’s era “nixonian” beliefs about marijuana enabled this huge waste of law and order resources, against the wishes of people who live in our county.

Thousands of hours of law enforcement, prosecutorial, and court system hours, costing Oakland County taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, have been wasted these past couple of years, while thousands of burglaries, assaults, and car thefts go unsolved. Voters should remember this when they get their ballots in the coming election and vote accordingly.

Craig Covey serves as Oakland County Commissioner representing the 25th District, which includes Ferndale, Hazel Park and Royal Oak. He can be reached at 248-721-6434 or craig@coveyforoakland.com.

Take it from Oregon-Vote NO

Sheriff Bouchard is correct-it's a nightmare in our communities and the illegalilty of these programs and those abusing the law is what is causing law enforcement to have to divert their scarce resources to deal with them.

Oregon voters were told in 1998 that the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program was for the sick and dying. Now 12 years later, less than 4% is for cancer. Over 88% is used for common/severe/chronic pain. A single doctor is responsible for recommending approximately 35% of all medical marijuana cards, with ten doctors recommending 59% of all cards.

What medicine have voters ever voted for?
What medicine have citizens ever smoked?
What medicine have citizens grown in their back yard without any controls, quantity amounts, and delivery methods?

Citizens and legislators are not ok with these programs and are already beginning repeal efforts because of the impacts to public safety, children, animals and the environment.

Marijuana is a Schedule I drug under the Federal Code of Regulations and the US Supreme Court has determined that marijuana in smoked form is not medicine and dangerous to the public’s health.

Just exactly, Ms. Oregon, are the who, what, where, who, why and when as to "...public safety, children, animals and the environment.." that have been adversely affected? Of course, you will have absolutely not even one valid or logical answer to this question.

OC taxpayers on the hook again b/c of Bouchard's incompetence. First it was the crony illegal process service contract that went from a budget of $800,000 to $2.6 MILLION after only 6 days when the contract was awarded to Bouchard's friend and Deputy employee. The closed bids never even made it through the Board of Commissioners...it was unilaterally granted to Bouchard's friend and employee of the Sheriff's Dept. TODAY, WE ARE ON THE HOOK FOR MILLIONS MORE. Dream Cruise stunt that sent people to the hospital and damaged several classic cars (http://www. topix. com/forum/county/oakland-mi/T802D7D8OL9UIGFA4) MY VOTE GOES TO JANE FELICE BOUDREAU FOR SHERIFF OF OAKLAND COUNTY. A REAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, NOT A CORRUPT POLITICIAN.

Bouchard puts his PARAMILITARY tank in OUR parades! This is where our children live and play! He holds fundraisers to shoot AK47's with him while drinking alcohol. He is not just incompetent....he is WRONG for our communities!
