What Do You Think About Downtown Farmington's New Holiday Decor?

Patrons of September's Harvest Moon celebration raised funds for the new lights and other trimmings.

Remember the money you spent at Walkers Tavern during Founders Festival so that downtown Farmington would have new holiday lights and decorations?

The $10,000 raised through Saturday night cover charges is on full display along Grand River, and we'd like to know what you think about the snowflakes atop the street lamps, the Santa mailbox and other trimmings. Take our poll, or leave your thoughts in a comment below.

Once you've shared your opinion, browse through our list of events going on today, as well as those later in the week that require registration or a ticket purchase.

They're a bit gaudy, but overall very pretty and appropriate. I love downtown Farmington at this time of year, and I think these are good additions.

I guess the fiscal "shortfall" is over. $10,000 on decorations that look like they were recycled from a 1960's strip mall? Was this really a high priority thing? Seems like there are plenty of other, more pressing needs in downtown Farmington than this. New decorations do not make empty stores look any better...

Everyone has a right right to an opinion on the aesthetics of the decorations, and I respect your right to disagree with mine. But since the money was donated for this specific purpose, your criticism of "priorities" is irrelevant, and unless you donated (my guess is you didn't), you have no standing to criticize the way the money was used.

Sorry, Michael - the money was "donated" by a city government agency, derived from entry fees to said agency's event, an event underwritten by collection of property tax dollars. Unless and until this agency and it's official overseers stop frittering this money away on frills and do-dads and starts concentrating on the real work of revitalization of business downtown, we will continue to have a "pretty" facade, and lots of empty space.

And, no, I did not "contribute"... I gave up forking my hard-earned money over to over-priced and underwhelming parties they throw down there. I shop downtown on an almost daily basis - patronizing the few good ones in hopes they'll thrive. So far, the history has not been supportive of those hopes. But, hey, the Santa's Mailbox is pretty...

As Scrooge's nephew Fred so aptly stated: "And therefore, Uncle, though it has never put a scrap of silver or gold in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good,
and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"
