Zombies, Angels Help Farmington Bookstore Celebrate

Off the Beaten Path Books and Cafe marks its first anniversary with a party in downtown Farmington.

celebrated its first year in business Sunday afternoon by staging a battle between zombies and angels in downtown Farmington.

Zombies shambled from the store, which is on Orchard Lake Rd., to meet the angels, led by Diane Rothman from , who walked from the on Grand River. Local residents turned out to watch, with some bringing their children in costume.

Bookstore owner Salathiel Palland said she couldn't have been happier with the event.

"It was awesome. When we turned the corner and saw all those people waiting, it was really cool," Palland said, adding she appreciated the attendance of member JoAnne McShane. "It felt like Farmington's really behind us." 

Angels and zombies faced off for a choreographed dance to Lady Gaga's mega-hit, "Bad Romance," which was followed by costume judging. The winners were zombie grandma Kristen Staubitz of Highland Twp. and angel Tristan Logan of Dearborn. Both said they are regulars at the bookstore, which has a steampunk theme (think Victorian science fiction, ala Jules Verne).

"I love that place," Logan said. "You can just go and hang out, and it feels like home, almost."

Upcoming events at the store include a stained glass class on Nov. 3, open mic night on Nov. 4, and Brenda Hasse on Nov. 5. For more information, visit the store's website or Facebook page.
