The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs asks homeowners to double check their contractor's license, pull the correct permit and hold off on advance payments before starting any renovations this summer.
Not every family has a Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor in it, and those that do might prefer the skills of a hired professional anyway. But before you start on any home improvement projects this summer, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. Before hiring (and paying) a contractor for your desired project, LARA recommends you double and triple check your chosen contractor is properly licensed. “Selecting a properly licensed contractor is the first and most important step in making home improvements,” said LARA Director Steven H. Hilfinger, in a prepared statement. “Ask to see a copy of their license then take a few minutes to look up the license online or give us a call. Those few …

Owner Michelle Lewis credits Farmington officials with helping to make her vision a reality.
Wine, snacks and art were all on the menu as Painting with a Twist opened its doors Thursday, in the Downtown Farmington Business Center. The Greater Farmington Area Chamber hosted a ribbon cutting for the business, which offers clients painting lessons, with the opportunity to bring in food and wine. In addition to instruction, the business provides canvases, acrylic paints, brushes, aprons and a work of art for inspiration. Opening the business took some time, because it required amending the city's liquor ordinances to allow patrons to consume alcohol, even though the business does not have a liquor license. "Without the City of Farmington, this would have never happened," Thomas said during the Friday ribbon cutting. Learn more about…

Tuesday, May 15
On Monday afternoon, a dozen local families got a lesson in how to stretch their food dollars, with help from a Farmington business owner. The idea started with Neighborhood House, a non-profit located in the Jon Grant Community Center in Farmington Hills, which helps needy residents get back on their feet after financial hardship and distress. The organization's board of directors wondered: What if clients could learn to bake bread? Board members realized those who were out of work would have time to take a class and learn a healthier, lower-cost way to put bread on their families’ tables. They would get the added benefit of learning a new skill. Board member Alan Maxey brought the idea to baker Jeff Pavlik, owner of Sunflour Bakehaus in…

Monthly figures for Oakland County show residential real estate market still rebounds.
Refreshing news for Farmington and Farmington Hills home-sellers is in the latest look at sale prices for homes and condos in four Metro Detroit counties. Median prices rose to $70,000 in Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Wayne last month, a 1.6-percent rise from March. The new median is nearly 19 percent higher than in April 2011, says a report Monday from Realcomp II Ltd., a multiple listing service in Farmington Hills. Selling prices rose within each county, extending a four-month trend for 2012. Livingston County has the highest median ($150,000), followed by Oakland ($114,500), Macomb ($72,500) and "Greater Wayne," excluding Detroit ($62,000). Percentage increases from the previous April are in a table below. Sales volume slipped for …
Store owner Michelle Lewis will celebrate Thursday with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony.
Michelle Lewis isn't just the owner of new Farmington business Painting with a Twist – she's a client. And a loyal one, at that. The Detroit native will celebrate the grand opening of her second store Thursday evening, with a Greater Farmington Area Chamber ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. Lewis opened her Ferndale store a little over a year ago, after becoming a loyal customer of parent company Corks N Canvas in New Orleans. Lewis said she went to the city to help with recovery efforts after hurricanes Katrina and Rita and ended up staying for five years. "My last year there, I went to a painting class," she said. "I didn't know what I was getting into ... I thought it was just a wine tasting event." Instead, she picked up a brush and became an…

What do plant-loving moms really want for Mother's Day? Patio flowers with exotic fragrances, trendy vertical gardens, a 'greens' garden, and ... a great big pile of mulch with all hands on deck.
If you’re one of the countless people who buy flowers for Mom on Mother’s Day, good for you … and great for Mom! There’s nothing like a big bouquet to brighten the day. Area gardening experts suggest taking Mom’s love of flowers a few steps further by picking up a plant for her that she can enjoy, perhaps as a centerpiece on Mother’s Day but then on her patio or deck as an added adornment this summer. And while plants in pots are great, so are blooms that brim from the new vertical, wall trays. Consider giving Mom gardening tools or even a big pile of mulch. Seriously, some mothers have reported that one of their best gifts ever was a pile of mulch and some extra hands for spreading it! Here, some plant- and garden-enthusiast gift ideas …

Chef Zach says his menu includes unique twists on old favorites and comfort food, as well as gluten-free selections.
After 12 years working as a chef in other restaurants, Zach Peterlin strikes out on his own this week, with the opening of Peterlin's Restaurant on Farmington Road, just south of Nine Mile. Peterlin learned the business from the ground up, starting as a dishwasher at age 15. A graduate of Northern Michigan University, he continued working in restaurants through school and moved to the Detroit area after graduation, to take a job with an upscale restaurant. "I really enjoy the instant gratification of seeing how much people enjoy good quality, fresh food," he said. "You see the smiles on their faces." Peterlin's Restaurant menu features moderately priced meals with fresh ingredients. Entrees average around $7-$8, the highest priced at $17…

Make sure your flower arrangement or plant arrives on time by calling your favorite florist today.
If you're thinking about brightening someone's day with flowers on Mother's Day May 13, get your order in early. Like now. That's advice from Nata, who works at Floral Expressions by Kathy, a Farmington shop owned by Kathy Julien. Those who wait for Friday or Saturday, she said, should remain flexible about colors and other details. "You'll still get a beautiful arrangement," she said, adding the most popular requests this year have been for a mixture of fresh flowers, like Michigan-grown lilies and roses, in a vase. Anyone who plans to send flowers to someone in another city or state should make that call immediately, Nata said. And when it comes to local deliveries, keep in mind that busy florists need to schedule deliveries based on …

The people responsible for spreading the news about downtown Farmington are now making the news. The Downtown Farmington Press Corps took top honors in the Outstanding Public Relations Effort award category during the May 4 Main Street Main Event, hosted by Main Street Oakland County. “What an achievement for this tremendous team of volunteers,” Annette Knowles, Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) executive director said. “In just one year, the Press Corps progressed from being an idea to becoming recognized as a best practice.” Formed in late 2010 through the DDA’s Organization committee, the Press Corps is comprised of talented writers who compose articles about newsworthy downtown happenings. Current members are Pat Shelton…
