Farmington Public Schools is one of 388 school districts in the nation being honored by the College Board, with a place on its AP® Achievement List. The honor recognizes the district for opening Advanced Placement (AP) classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while ensuring a continued high level of achievement, district officials said. Twelve students from the Mercy High School Art Department won 20 awards in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition. Senior Stephanie O’Neil's portfolio made finalist status and will compete in New York City for talent scholarships. Miriam MacLachlan, O’Neil, Michaela Tanksley and Madeleine Wagner also won gold keys (first place) for individual entries. Their pieces will also compete in New York. Giving teacher gifts at the holidays is an honored tradition in many schools. This year, the teachers and students at Highmeadow Common Campus elementary in Farmington Hills are honoring another tradition, while teaching a lesson in giving. A few weeks ago, children brought home a note that read, "Instead of buying your child's teacher a gift, please consider helping a family that is more in need ." Parents and children crowded around craft tables Thursday evening, during Longacre Elementary School's Holiday Craft Workshop, held in the school gymnasium. Parent volunteer Kim Liverance, who organized the event, said children had the opportunity to make five crafts for $5. "Any money we make goes back to the school," she said.
