Steppingstone School presents the fourth in its SPARCler series of parent support seminars which are open to the public.  Parenting Traps: Raising Your Gifted Child featuring Dr. David Klimek who is a clinical psychologist with 40 years experience serving gifted families; founder and director of The Alliance for Gifted Children in Ann Arbor, MI.

Dr. Klimek will introduce the subject which will then culminate in a round table discussion with the audience, answering any questions that you may have.

TONIGHT!  Please join us in a spirited discussion about the parenting traps of raising your gifted children.  Here are a few of the 'traps' he will discuss: The Manipulation TrapGifted children sound mature but can't always shoulder responsibility at the same level of intellectual understanding because they are emotionally still children.   How should we handle this? The Sleep TrapGifted Children often do not sleep much.  It may seem as if they don't "need" sleep, but if they don't get the sleep they "need" and become sleep-deprived, they may look as if they are ADHD.   How do we help them to get the sleep they need?  They may "need" sleep but have difficulty going to sleep or staying asleep.  In order to go to sleep and sleep through the night, they need to be intellectually and physically tired.   The Education TrapParents sometimes judge that a school is appropriate based on their gifted child's good grades.  However, if the work does not present a challenge, the student will not have the excitement of learning new things and become stressed.  If in a non-learning environment for a few years, depression and/or anger may occur. How can this problem be addressed? The Emotional Intensity TrapGifted children tend to respond to frustration and disappointment with great emotional intensity - meltdowns, tantrums and/or outbursts.   What's the best way to respond to this, especially in a public venue, given that punishments and/or humiliation usually result in greater anger rather than resolution.  The Sensory Integration Trap Gifted children often have extreme sensory response to lights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures.  It's common for them to be irritated by clothing labels, food textures/tastes, smells, loud sounds and/or blinking lights.   How do we accommodate them?

The Manipulation Trap
Gifted children sound mature but can't always shoulder responsibility at the same level of intellectual understanding because they are emotionally still children.
The Sleep Trap
Gifted Children often do not sleep much.

The Education Trap
Parents sometimes judge that a school is appropriate based on their gifted child's good grades. However, if the work does not present a challenge, the student will not have the excitement of learning new things and become stressed. If in a non-learning environment for a few years, depression and/or anger may occur.
The Emotional Intensity Trap
Gifted children tend to respond to frustration and disappointment with great emotional intensity - meltdowns, tantrums and/or outbursts.
The Sensory Integration Trap
Gifted children often have extreme sensory response to lights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures. It's common for them to be irritated by clothing labels, food textures/tastes, smells, loud sounds and/or blinking lights.
