"Blended" Learning High School Promotes Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds with Cycling Challenge to Benefit Boys & Girls Club

Nexus Academy of Royal Oak’s commitment to promoting healthy bodies as well as healthy minds has taken on a new spin with the introduction of its Pedaling Principal Challenge. The tuition-free, public “blended” learning school for students in grades 9-12 will pit seven of its students and principal, Dale Bernard, against each other to see who can log more miles on the school’s Life Cycle stationary bikes during the month of November.

“Studies show a positive correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement,” said Bernard. “As such, at Nexus Academy of Royal Oak we promote daily exercise inside or outside of school. However, what’s truly unique about Nexus Academy is that our students can exercise on one of our four Life Cycles while also doing their school work.”

With its Pedaling Principal Challenge, Nexus Academy of Royal Oak is embracing the Let’s Move initiative introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for children and adolescents. According to the Let’s Move program, eight to 18-year-olds spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media, including, TV, computers, video games, cell phones and movies, and only one-third of high school students get the recommended levels of physical activity.

“The Pedaling Principal Challenge is simply a fun way to remind our students to remain active,” said Bernard. “To encourage this lifestyle, I will be pedaling to beat their average number of miles in order to see who will volunteer at the local Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County.”

The Challenge, which began November 1, will run throughout the month. No matter the winner, the local Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County will be seeing some new volunteers. If Bernard wins, each participating student will volunteer for 10 hours; if the students win, Bernard will provide 25 hours of volunteer service to the local Boys & Girls Club.
