Local Organization Combats Childhood Obesity Through Sports Camps

Physically Fit 4 Hoops is a Detroit-based organization that instills self-confidence and self-discipline, and provides instruction through its different basketball camps for Metro Detroit youth. The organization creates athletic and social programs to support and encourage local youth to become healthy, educated, productive and caring.

“Our organization believes in the education of our youth, both on and off the court,” said Shawn Fair, founder of the Physically Fit 4 Hoops basketball camp. “We want our children to have a vision beyond the basketball court, which is why we include discussions during our camps that go beyond the game of basketball. We also understand the importance of being physically fit as well, and have worked hard to educate parents and children about making healthy decisions to combat childhood obesity.”

The core philosophy of Fit 4 Hoops is C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Citizenship, Accountability, Attitude, Responsibility, Respect, Excellence, Education, Scholarship and Skills).  Physically Fit 4 Hoops is constantly looking for teachable moments to inspire both campers and parents and make the most of every opportunity.  At the beginning of the camps, campers turn in their report cards and throughout the school year, the staff of Physically Fit 4 Hoops follows their progress.  Campers will be rewarded for their continued success in school with prize incentives.

Since its inception, the Physically Fit 4 Hoops Foundation has been able to impact hundreds of children throughout Metro Detroit through its sponsored basketball and fitness camps. Part of the organization’s goal is also addressing the national epidemic of childhood obesity by providing parents and campers with the necessary knowledge and tools to combat obesity. Nutritional education is included in all Fit 4 Hoops camps, and the organization partnered with ChooseMyPlate.gov to help families make healthy dietary changes based on MyPlate’s dietary guidelines.

Fit 4 Hoops’ next camp is a Skills Development Basketball Camp that will begin on September 14th, 2013. The campers will meet on September 14th, 21st, and 28th from 9am - 12pm at Bethany Lutheran Gym located on 11475 E. Outer Drive, Detroit MI, 48204. The cost is $60.00 for all three Saturdays and spots are filling up quickly.
