5 Ways to Celebrate Parks in Farmington and Farmington Hills

Do you have a favorite way to enjoy local parks? Tell us with a comment.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has in July celebrated America's local parks and recreation areas. Here are five ways to enjoy parks in Farmington and Farmington Hills before this month is over:

1. Attend a concert.

Rhythmz in Riley Park on Fridays in downtown Farmington runs through August 23, and Stars in the Park concerts on Thursdays in Heritage Park, Farmington Hills, run through August 22. Bring a blanket or chair, a picnic dinner and enjoy these 7 p.m. events.

2. Splash or skate around.

Cool off at the Heritage Park splash pad, which is free and open and located near the north shelter. It's open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you prefer your action on wheels or blades, try out the Riley Skate Park or Farmington Hills Ice Arena at Founders Sports Park on Eight Mile west of Gill.

3. Get close to nature.

If you love all things wild, stop by the Nature Discovery Center in Heritage Park and talk to a naturalist, browse through the exhibits or spend some time looking for birds, squirrels, chipmunks and more in the observation room. Or hit the more rustic trails in Woodland Hills Nature Park.

4. Take a walk.

Many Farmington and Farmington Hills Parks have dedicated trails you can follow. Part of Shiawassee Park's trail follows the Rouge River branch that runs through the Farmington park.

5. Pitch in and clean up.

You can pick up debris and trash any time and drop items into trash barrels. If you want to take part in a more organized effort, Heritage Park work days are planned Aug. 17 and Sept. 21, or join in Rouge River Rescue events held in June. And remember to clean up after your dog in Farmington parks (In Farmington Hills, dogs are only allowed at William Grace Dog Park.)
