City, Commission Honor Farmington Area Seniors for Volunteer Work

WXYZ's Cheryl Chodun keynotes the April 11 Senior Volunteer Recognition Breakfast.

The Farmington Area Commission on Aging and City of Farmington Hills Senior Division honored five senior volunteers during an April 11 breakfast at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. 

The Commission on Aging recognized Sue Mikolajczak with a Gold Award and Mary Larson with the Maggie Loridas Diamond Award. The Senior Division recognized Carol Johnston with the Robert A. Eastman S.A.G.E. Award, Bettie McIntire with the Loretta C. Conway Senior Division Award, and Galey DiMercurio with the Aldo Vagnozzi Spirit Award.

Attended by over 140 volunteers, the Senior Volunteer Recognition Breakfast featured WXYZ-TV's Cheryl Chodun as the keynote speaker. The theme, “Volunteers Rock,” saluted those who share their time and talent as the backbone of city programs for seniors.

Volunteers provide many vital services, that include:

  • packing and delivering meals for Meals-On-Wheels
  • answering phones for SMART Transportation
  • volunteering in schools with SAGE
  • working in the gift shop and SENEX
  • offering AARP Tax Assistance
  • sewing bears for cancer patients
  • working with home chores
