Drop Off Paint and More at Household Hazardous Waste Days

Farmington and Farmington Hills residents may participate in October Novi and Southfield events, with proof of residency.

Two fall Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days will be held on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Novi Civic Center at 45175 W. 10 Mile Rd. in Novi, and on Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Recycling Authority headquarters at 20000 W. Eight Mile Rd. in Southfield.

Residents of Farmington Hills, Farmington, Novi, South Lyon, Southfield, Walled
Lake, and Wixom are all eligible to attend either event, with proof of residency.

Acceptable items include cleaners, oil-based paints, herbicides, insecticides, and solvents, brought in containers that are labeled and do not hold more than five gallons or weigh more than 50 pounds. Fluorescent bulbs, including CFLs (energy saving compact fluorescent lights), are also accepted, and document shredding is available, with a 100-pound limit per household.

Electronic waste is accepted including televisions, radios, computers, and computer components such as CPUs, monitors, printers, and keyboards.

The following items are not accepted: commercial or business waste, unknowns over five gallons, smoke detectors, radioactive waste, ammunition or explosives.

Latex paint is also not accepted because it’s not considered hazardous waste. If
the can is full, pour some out onto newspapers and then add sand or kitty litter to the amount left in the can. The remaining paint will solidify in a few days. Once it is completely solid, place the can in a plastic garbage bag and throw it out with your regular trash.

For a complete list of items accepted at the drop-off days, and a list of green nontoxic alternatives, call RRRASOC (Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County) at 248-208-2270 or visit RRRASOC.org.
