Farmington Hills 10-Year-Old Sues Mom's Ex to Get Her Dog Back

Hannah Wise's story has gone viral since she spoke about it during a Detroit storytelling event.

A Farmington Hills girl's effort to get her dog back from her mother's ex-boyfriend is spreading across the country this week.

Hannah Wise's mother, Adrienne Lenhoff, sued Mitchell Rechter, on behalf of her 10-year-old daughter. The two allege that Rechter kept Hannah's teacup poodle, Mystic, after they moved out of Rechter's West Bloomfield home, according to a Nov. 18 story in The Oakland Press. A July trial is scheduled in Oakland County Circuit Court.

Since Hannah told her story during The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers Nov. 15 event at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, it has been published by news outlets throughout metro Detroit, in USA Todayon the ABC News website and London's Mail Online

According to reports, Hannah's grandmother gave her Mystic to comfort her after the death of another dog. Mystic stayed with Rechter after Lenhoff and Wise moved out. According to The Oakland Press story:

"Lenhoff said they made an agreement with Rechter for Wise to see the dog whenever she wanted. But Wise said when she called Rechter to get her dog back, he would not answer or return her calls."

In addition to Mystic, the lawsuit seeks the return of other items, including the ketubah, or Jewish marriage document, from Lenhoff's first marriage, according to reports.
