Groundbreaking Set Saturday for Downtown Farmington Ice Rink

The public is invited to attend the Riley Park Ice Rink event, which starts at noon.

Future downtown Farmington ice skaters are invited to share in the groundbreaking for Riley Park Ice Rink, slated at noon on Nov. 2.

The ice rink is expected to open in December, weather permitting, and will turn Riley Park into an all-season destination, joining the May-November Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market, Rhythmz in Riley Park summer concert series and fall Harvest Moon Celebration.

Serv-Ice Refrigeration of Northville, which services the ice rink at Campus Martius in Detroit, has been tapped to build the Farmington rink. City officials do not anticipate any road closures longer than four hours due to construction.

The 4,800-square-foot, refrigerated Riley Park Ice Rink, complete with lights, will be open for skating on most cold-weather winter days from December through mid-March. The project was made possible by a $100,000 donation from the Riley Foundation, along with other community donations.
