Love Sci Fi and Fantasy? This Farmington Hills Garage Sale is for You

Rick Sands is selling off hundreds of books as he and his wife prepare to move.

Science fiction and fantasy fans, Rick Sands has a deal for you.

The Farmington Hills resident and his wife, Diane, are moving, which means it's time for Rick to clear out his collection of around 1,700 books.

"It's about 25 or 30 years' worth," he said. "This is the second selling."

An avid reader since he was 4 years old, Rick said he latched on to science fiction with the book "The Spaceship Under My Apple Tree", by Louis Slobodkin.

"It was exciting and different, a little more grown-up," he said of the book. "It was cutting edge at the time, a look into the future."

In a good year, Rick reads an average of 150-200 books, at a rate of about 800 words a minute. He looks for series and appreciates books that surprise him.

"I like something that will keep me guessing," he said.

Even though the books are going, the reading won't stop. Rick has 200 books stored on his electronic tablet, although he said he prefers the feel of paper. There is a more practical consideration, too.

"I can read longer than the battery can last," he said.

The garage sale will be held Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days, at 28220 Brandywine in Farmington Hills.
