Son of Nazi War Hero, Convert to Judaism to Speak in Farmington Hills

Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger will discuss his memoir at the Holocaust Memorial Center on Sept. 29.

The Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills hosts author Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger, who will discuss his book A German Life: Against All Odds, Change Is Possible, on Sept. 29.

Beginning at 3 p.m., he will detail his inspiring story of a man whose journey of discovery ultimately led to a crisis of faith, family and religion.

Wollschlaeger was the son of a Nazi war hero who received the Iron Cross (Germany's highest military honor) from Adolf Hitler himself. In his quest to find answers to questions about his parents and nation’s past, he set out to find the truth, and, in doing so, found a new life and separation from family, friends and country.  His search eventually led him to Israel, where he converted to Judaism, served with distinction in the Israel Defense Forces, confronted his family's past, and built a new life.

Admission for the event is $8 (free for Holocaust Memorial Center members). Wollschlaeger will be available to sign copies of his book, which can be purchased following his presentation.
