You Could Be the First on Mars: Here’s How to Get Way, Way Out There

Some of the brightest college students in the country are working on an ambitious $25 million project to send a payload of selfies and other digital data to Mars.

You – well, your selfie at any rate – could  be the first to land on Mars as part of the Time Capsule to Mars project of students at MIT, Duke, Stanford and Yukon.

The students want to land the time capsule on Mars within two years, Newsy reports, and are asking people around the world to contribute digital messages, photos, videos and audio files. It costs 99 cents to upload data. You can do that here.

This is a higher-tech version of the clunky time capsules of the past.

Tell Us:

  • What will you be doing in your selfie, and what message will you send to Mars?

The selfies and other digital messages will be loaded on über-thin sheets of tungsten, a brittle metal capable of withstanding temperatures of 3422 degrees Celsius before melting, and dropped on the surface of Mars, National Geographic explains.

The project, announced Monday at the National Press Club, will cost $25 million to accomplish, money that will be raised through crowdsourcing. NASA and other big names in the space industry are supporting the project, including the nonprofit Explore Mars.
