‘American Idol’ Season Finale: Jena Irene Holds Her Own

Farmington Hills’ Jena Irene Asciutto held her own on “American Idol” Tuesday in one final competition against rival Caleb Johsnon. 

The  in the two-night season finale of the FOX network reality talent show began Tuesday, and the 13th “Idol” will be named Wednesday night.

Judge Harry Connick Jr. said the two finalists turned in performances that were like Joe Frazier fighting Muhammad Ali in a title bout, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Asciutto performed Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and “We Are One,”  which she co-wrote with “Idol” alum Felicia Barton.

Judges gave the first round to Johnson, who brought the crowd to its feet with Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

Asciutto got the audience to their feet in the second set, when she reprised what the Free Press called a “captivating, pure-voiced performance” of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

Johnson faltered some on Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” trading theatrics for the song’s soul, judge Jennifer Lopez said.

The final round featuring the finalists’ “coronation songs” – the eventual winner’s song will be released as a single – was a toss up. Asciutto performed “We Are One,” which she co-wrote with “Idol” alum Felicia Barton.

Johnson performed a rocker,  “As Long as You Love Me.”
