Seaway Chorale Presents Tapestry of American Music

At First Presbyterian Church of Farmington

(For immediate release)  What makes American music “American”? You can start with the ageless melodies of George Gershwin and Cole Porter, mix in some classic tunes by Irving Berlin and George M. Cohan, add a touch of Elvis Presley, the Andrews Sisters, and Michigan composer H. Owen Reed for good measure, and you’ve got a good start on answering that question.

If that’s too much work, there’s an even easier solution: come hear the Seaway Chorale under the direction of conductor Gerald Custer on Sunday, April 22 at 4:00 PM as they bring “An American Tapestry” to First Presbyterian Church of Farmington as part of the 2012 Performing Arts Series.

Now in its 36th season, the Seaway Chorale is the downriver area’s leading community chorus. It has been described by critics as one of the area’s cultural gems, and performs popular music and light classics to packed audiences twice each year. Previous appearances have included singing for the Republican National Convention and at the Festival of Trees at Detroit’s Cobo Hall; performing at Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park; appearing at the Fox Theatre’s Christmas show, and performing with Southern Great Lakes Symphony Orchestra.

The Chorale is led by Gerald Custer, who also serves as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church and on the faculty of the Department of Music at Wayne State University. A Grammy-nominated, award-winning composer and arranger, Custer has prepared choruses for Maestros David Rayl (Michigan State University), Leon Gregorian (Greater Lansing Symphony), Dai-Uk Lee (Michigan Chamber Symphony), and Nan Washburn (Michigan Philharmonic), among others.

No tickets are required for this outstanding event, which is open to the public. A donation of $10 per person or $25 per family is suggested. First Presbyterian Church is located at 26165 Farmington Road in Farmington Hills, just east of the intersection of Eleven Mile and Farmington Roads. Ample free parking is available on site, and the entire facility is barrier free and handicap accessible.

Further details about the Performing Arts Series at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington are available at the church’s website, www.farmington-pres.org. For more information about this concert, call 248-474-6170, ext. 208.
