Hills Resident Jazzes Up Rhythmz in Riley Park

The Paul Dozier Quartet played to an appreciative crowd in downtown Farmington.

The Paul Dozier Quartet played to a full and appreciative crowd at Rhythmz in Riley Park Friday night, and for two of the musicians, the trip home took just a few minutes.

Dozier and keyboard player Careem Warren are both Farmington Hills residents. Kali Douglas, the group's drummer, is from Southfield, and bassist William Pope hails from Detroit.

A performer for 45 years, Dozier said his father, Raymond, was a professional singer. "He formed a group with me and my brothers," Dozier said. "We were the Dozier Singers. I recorded my first 45 (rpm record) when I was six years old."

Originally from California, Dozier has traveled as a performer to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and all around the U.S. He came to Michigan with his family in 1998, looking for "a change of scenery." They've lived in Farmington Hills 10 years; his son, Sultan Hubbard, will be a senior at Harrison High School this fall.

The quartet plays next at the Ribs & Soul Fest at Hart Plaza in Detroit on July 22.
