Oakland County Contestants Still Have Voice on ‘American Idol’

The field is being winnowed on FOX's hit reality show, but Jena Irene Asciutto and Malaya Watson are still singing.

Two Oakland County teenagers are still in the hunt for the “American Idol” title and its record deal.

After Thursday’s show on the FOX Network, Jena Irene Asciutto, 17, of Farmington Hills and Malaya Watson, 16, of Southfield advanced to next week’s competition.

Asciutto, who sang “Suddenly I See You” by KT Tunstall, was in the bottom three of the contestants, along with Emily Piriz and MK Nobilette. Priz got the boot.

That’s where Watson landed last week, but she redeemed herself with a powerful rendition of the gospel song, “Take Me to the King.”

“I have goosies and tears in my eyes,” Judge Jennifer Lopez said. “I am so proud of you.”
