Farmington Area Parents Share Back-to-School Advice

Parents say staying active, not eating dinner too late and getting up early all summer helps kids transition from the lazy days of summer.

Three weeks from today, Farmington Public Schools kids will be up bright and early, ready to start the 2013-2014 school year.

We asked parents how they're shifting kids out of the lazy days of summer. Here's their best advice:

"Being very active- especially with activities that require early rising- helps an earlier bedtime seem more attractive." - Denise Lester

"Don't eat dinner too late and take things down a notch. Not too much excitement so they can get to sleep. Dark room with a fan for white noise. Works every time." - Linda Ferrante Verlinde

"I just encouraged them to try getting to bed earlier...reminding them that there would be no mercy once school started. It didn't usually work - getting IN bed and actually getting TO SLEEP were two different things. We just had to bite the bullet and muddle through the first week with a nap or three! Note that once high school began, I left bedtime and wake up time to the kids...their schedules were their own, provided academic performance and general behavior was acceptable. This plan worked well for us." - Rhonda Anderson

"My kids have been in Wake up early mode all summer with camps, swim team, etc... Better to not get in the habit of sleeping in." - Tiphany Vietor
