Take 'Small Steps for Mother Earth' on April 20 in Farmington Hills

The city celebrates Earth Day 2012 with games, a 1.5 mile walk and more.

The will celebrate Earth Day 2012 on Friday, April 20 with events including the “Small Steps for Mother Earth” walk, which will bring together environmentally-minded families to celebrate and show support for sustainable initiatives throughout the schools and community.

The Earth Day event is a joint effort by the Green Teams; Peace, Love & Planet; the City’s Commission for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES); and . The event will recognize outstanding “green” efforts and underscore the need to reduce consumption of nonrenewable resources and develop environmentally conscious behaviors.   

The Earth Day schedule will include:

  • 12:30 p.m. – Meet at the Heritage Park pavilion. Bring a picnic lunch and a reusable water bottle.

  • 1:00 p.m. – Earth Day games

  • 1:30 p.m. – “Small Steps for Mother Earth” 1.5 mile walk to City Hall going north on Farmington Road to Eleven Mile. Participants will pick up litter along the route.

  • 2:30 p.m. - Tour the LEED Gold-certified Farmington Hills City Hall.

  • 3:00 p.m. - Closing ceremony at City Hall.

  • 3:30 p.m. - Shuttle provided back to Heritage Park to pick up cars.

  • All children must be accompanied by an adult. No drop offs will be allowed. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions.

    Earth Day was officially designated in 1970 as a national day to foster appreciation of the earth's environment and awareness of the issues that threaten it. At present, Earth Day is observed in 175 countries. The Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act were all passed as a result of Earth Day.
