Botsford Trauma Center Receives High Marks in 3-Year Reverification

Botsford Hospital's 2-year-old Level II Trauma Center has achieved a three-year reverification by the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

According to a hospital press release, the prestigious achievement is atypical among relatively young trauma programs. Not only is Botsford the first Level II Trauma Center serving southwestern Oakland County and northwestern Wayne County, it continues to be the only hospital to do so.  

ACS reviewers gave high marks to Botsford, the release indicated, finding the hospital to be proficient in every aspect of its trauma program. This is especially notable since trauma care joins the services of many departments at this independent hospital, including the Emergency & Trauma Center; Surgical Services for trauma, orthopedic, spine, and vascular surgeries; Anesthesia; Imaging Services; Nursing; and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. 

Botsford's trauma program offers a full range of surgical procedures around the clock with entire teams of medical professionals on site or available within 15 minutes of notification for most critically injured patients. Michael Rebock, D.O., a general surgeon specializing in trauma care, leads the trauma response team.

Areas of review examined by ACS include Botsford's administrative commitment to trauma services, the hospital's track record of developing trauma care resources, the work of attending physicians and residents of its Department of Emergency Medicine in regional emergency medical system development and educational commitment; its participation in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) at the state and federal levels; its onsite Critical Care Unit, its state-of-the-art Imaging Center, Blood Bank, and other Laboratory Services; and Botsford’s extensive rehabilitative services. 

ACS was also impressed with the fact that Oakland County's world-renown medical examiner, Ljubisa J. Dragovic, M.D., reviews cases at the hospital's Trauma Conference, according to the release.

In 2012 alone, Botsford Hospital cared for 1,122 critically injured patients in its Trauma Center. Of those patients: 

• 207 were admitted for surgery 
• 1,008 presented with blunt injuries 
• 43 had penetrating injuries 
• 25 had burns 
• 46 were ages 1 to 15 
• 361 were ages 16 to 40 
• 335 were ages 41 to 64 
• 380 were age 65 or older
