Dog Day Afternoon at Village Green in Farmington Hills

Pets take center stage for a day to raise awareness and funds for an animal foster care agency.

Employees at Village Green corporate offices in Farmington Hills put their dogs through paces Friday, during a Home Run Obedience competition.

The company manages multi-family housing communities in Michigan and 10 other states.

The event was part of the company's participation in Take Your Dog to Work Day. For the 13th year, employees who donated $25 were able to bring their pets to work, coordinator Christine Eluskie said. She brought her American pit bull/terrier mix Chloe, who was the 2005 poster dog for Pet Sitters International, the organization that launched the annual event in 1999.

In addition to raising funds for Lansing-based Animal Placement Bureau, an animal foster care agency, Take Your Dog to Work Day gives employees the opportunity to share with co-workers the value of having a pet, and "an awareness that you can adopt from shelters", Eluskie said.

Funds were also raised through an online auction at the event website, dogday.villagegreen.com
