Drakeshire Coffee Shop Plans Move Forward

The Farmington Planning Commission approves changes to the former Fresh Approach space in the shopping center at Grand River and Drake.

The Farmington Planning Commission approved plans Monday that may bring a coffee and yogurt shop to Drakeshire shopping center at Grand River and Drake.

Economic and Community Development Director Kevin Christiansen said Thursday that plans call for splitting the former Fresh Approach grocery store space in the northwest corner of the building into three units. The space currently faces the parking lot; two of the newly formed units will face Grand River.

Façade modifications include new glass windows and doors, removal of the sidewalk on the north side and installation of a patio area for outdoor seating.

"Specific tenants have not been secured to date," Christiansen said, adding the owners are focusing on attracting Biggby, a Michigan-based coffee shop chain with a location on Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills and a new shop expected soon at Nine Mile and Middlebelt in Farmington Hills.

"New tenants will certainly bring new business to the center and rekindle interest," Christiansen said. "We're very excited for them."

Drakeshire owners in October reached an agreement with the City of Farmington for a $400,000 special assessment agreement to fix up what was a nearly-vacant and blighted property.
