Farmington Dots Store to Close After 20 Years

The store's traffic dipped as the Downtown Farmington Center's tenants left.

, one of the longest surviving tenants in the Downtown Farmington Center, will close Dec. 28 – largely because it's one of only a few tenants left. 

The store is located in a part of the downtown mall that has been hard hit over the past several years. Currently, the building has five tenants: , , Dots, the and . 

Dots director of real estate Kyle Koenig said the store opened almost 20 years ago. The company has launched stores this year in the area, which the company hopes will attract Farmington's customers. Dots Farmington employees will also be able to relocate to other Detroit-area stores.

Koenig said the store was closed because the traffic just wasn't there any more.

"The shopping center has a pretty good amount of vacancies," he said, "and as we've seen those other tenants leave, we've seen less traffic. You can see the trend line, and it wasn't going in the right direction."

Overall, he said, the Cleveland, OH-based company's 415 stores are doing well. Dots opened 25 stores this year and plans to open another 45 in 2012. 

"Business has been good," he said. "We are in the process of converting some of our older stores and looking at whether we can justify reinvestment. In this location, we could not." 

Customers of the Farmington store are encouraged to move to Dots at 7 Mile and Middlebelt Road in Livonia, Koenig said.
