Botsford Health Care has promoted James Smith, FACHE (Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives), to vice president of Strategy and Business Development. He now has system-wide strategic planning responsibilities as well as leadership over Botsford Hospital's Marketing and Public Relations Department.
Smith's will plan new business initiatives and assist Botsford's executives and Board of Directors in meeting the health care organization's strategic goals. In addition, he is Botsford's government relations liaison.
Smith has served in increasingly responsible positions during his 12-year tenure at the Farmington Hills hospital. His Botsford career progression includes these previous job roles: analyst, coordinator, manager, and most recently director.
A longtime resident of Grand Blanc, Smith earned the Master of Business Administration in Leadership Studies and an undergraduate degree from Baker College in Flint.
In a related move, the title of longtime Botsford executive Margo Gorchow has changed to reflect her updated responsibilities. She is now the hospital's vice-president of Community Relations and executive director of The Botsford Foundation.
Health care reform now requires non-profit hospitals to prepare an extensive report reflecting data learned from a community health needs assessment (CHNA). Gorchow will plan and prepare Botsford's CHNA program. This assessment and report is filed with the hospital's tax return and should demonstrate and validate the hospital's non-profit status.
In continuing to lead Botsford's community relations activities, Gorchow's external relationships and affiliations with community agencies are an essential component of the hospital's efforts in managing population health in the world of health reform.
Gorchow remains as leader of the health care organization's fundraising arm. The Botsford Foundation is embarking on a multimillion-dollar capital campaign this year to support the hospital's master facility plan.
Gorchow, a resident of Troy, began serving Botsford in 1983 as a health educator. She was then promoted to director of Botsford's Health Development Network. From there, she was tapped by hospital leadership to formalize the hospital's community and public relations role followed by developing its Marketing Department in 1988.
Gorchow shared in the leadership of Botsford's inaugural fundraising campaign, which expanded the West Pavilion and built the East Pavilion in the early 1990s. She became a vice president in 2005.
