Farmington Hills Couple Keeps Business in the Community

Mara Topper and David Warmbier celebrate the opening of Senior Counseling Services new location Thursday.

Celebrating its 10th year in business, Senior Counseling Services is hosting a community open house Thursday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the company's new location on 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.

David Warmbier and Mara Topper founded their business in 2000, after realizing that social (non-medical) senior care was considered a low priority when the federal government changed the structure of Medicare. While under-funded, it was still a high priority, so they decided to start Senior Counseling Services in their Farmington Hills home.

The business, which serves seniors and home-bound individuals across southeast Michigan, addresses a variety of issues such as depression, feelings of isolation, dementia, mental illness and health issues. Senior Counseling Services offers in-home counseling and therapy services, as well as long-term planning for seniors, people who are homebound and people with disabilities.

Whether it’s mediating between adult children who disagree on the right path for their aging parents, mental health concerns and counseling or even power of attorney issues, Senior Counseling Services is there to help.

Warmbier’s extensive background includes individual and family therapy, medical home health care and geriatrics. His work speaks for itself, Topper said.

“David started Senior Counseling Services as a private practice and soon had 40 referrals," she said.

The biggest challenge facing Senior Counseling Services is that there is a lot of opportunity; almost too much.

“We’re always hiring,” Topper said.

The search for the new location was mostly local, because they wanted to stay in the community. The couple's daughter attends and Topper is on the Planning Commission.

“We wanted to stay in Farmington Hills,” she admitted.

During their July 7 open house, you can expect to see their new office on 12 Mile between Halstead Road and Haggerty Road, learn about the services they offer and how they help ease the stresses that come with aging. And you'll “enjoy some great food,” Topper said.
