Farmington Hills Woman Gets Moms Moving with Baby Boot Camp

Michelle Kreager leads the exercise group three times a week at Shiawassee Park in Farmington.

After Michelle Kreager had her daughter Elsie in 2010, she found a combination of friendships and fitness in a Baby Boot Camp class in South Bend, IN.

The franchise offers moms the opportunity to bring their babies to an exercise class, pushing strollers through power walks and parking them nearby as they work out.

"It got me back into shape right away," she said. "I got to talk with other moms that had babies. A lot of times after you've had your first child, you don't have anyone to turn to."

When Kreager moved to Farmington Hills a year ago, she left that group behind and found there was nothing like it in this area.

"I decided to start my own franchise to give moms the same opportunity that I had after I had Elsie," she said.

The group meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in Shiawassee Park in Farmington. Moms do "interval training", a mix of cardio and strength training, building their endurance and the muscles they need to hold their babies. As the moms take out their yoga mats and blankets to exercise on the ground, the babies get out of their strollers and play together.

Waterford resident and Farmington Area Moms Club member Kellie Pohl, who is originally from Australia, found the class after Kreager posted a notice online. She enjoys the exercise, along with the opportunity to meet other moms.

"It's just a really good workout for an hour, and you get to have some time with your young one," she said.
