"Gridiron" Brings Ford Field to Fishbone's

When the Detroit Lions score at home, or on the road, St. Clair Shores-resident Theo Spight leads fans in singing the fight song, Gridiron Heroes.

During home games at Ford Field, Spight is on the field with his Lions jersey and hardhat leading the crowd in the 10-line fight song that ends in "Gooooo Lions."

When the team hits the road, including tonight's "Monday Night Football" Game in Chicago against the Bears, he brings his Lions gear and sings at Fishbone's in St. Clair Shores.

"I call myself a football fan who just happens to know how to sing," Spight said before last Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Spight is in his ninth year of singing the fightsong for the Lions after being discovered during a singing contest sponsored by WDIV-TV.

And now the Chrysler employee, member of the Dan Rafferty Band and guest host of a fantasy sports show on ESPN Detroit, has been living a "dream" of being a Lions fan during this time - especially during last year's playoff run.

"The Lions have the greatest fans ever," he said. "All they want to do is see the team win."

Spight is performing another season at Fishbone's in St. Clair Shores, which adds to the atmosphere in the restaurant on game day.

Mike Filippelli, Fishbone's general manager, said Spight has brought has a taste of Ford Field to the restaurant by singing the fight song and interacting with fans.

"He definintely contributes to the whole experience of coming here to watch the game," he said. "His singing, his presence ... it gets (diners) to stay here and gets them involved in the game."

The Detroit Lions take on the Chicago Bears at 8:30 p.m. Monday in Chicago.
