Guitar Smashes Through Ribbon at Farmington School of Rock

The traditional Greater Farmington Area Chamber welcoming ceremony came with a twist Friday, as a new music school launched its weekend-long grand opening celebration.

Normally, when the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes a new business to town, director Mary Engelman breaks out the "big scissors."

They were nowhere to be found at Friday's ribbon cutting ceremony for School of Rock on Orchard Lake Rd. in Farmington. Instead, owner Dale Smigelski grabbed an electric guitar and smashed it through the ribbon and onto the sidewalk outside the business' front door.

Friday's event was just the beginning of School of Rock's weekend celebration. Today's grand opening, from 12 p.m.-3 p.m., includes enrollment specials, performances by students from the Rochester and St. Clair Shores schools, and T-shirt giveaways. There will be an open house Sunday, 12 p.m.-5 p.m.
