Neighborhood Shop: Sunflour Bakehaus Offers Holiday Tasting Saturday

Stop by this community-based bakery to sample a variety of baked goods and pastries.

If you’ve ever walked through or visited the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market, you have probably noticed the aroma of fresh baked goodies emanating from , formerly known as Farmington Bakery.

A feast for the eyes as well as the stomach, the bakery has been a downtown destination for seven decades. In 1998, the husband and wife team of Becky Burns and Jeff Pavlik purchased the bakery and poured all their love for baking into it. The result is a good-for-you menu that offers a tasty variety of pastries, cakes, cookies and breads, five days a week.

Pavlik and Burns chose the name Sunflour Bakehaus in 2007, as a way to emphasize and promote the whole grain selections that set the bakery apart, Burns said.

In addition to traditional baked goods, the bakery’s offerings include specialty holiday baked goods that are as unique as they are delicious. On display during their annual holiday tasting event this Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., will be items like Springerle (a German anise cookie) and L’eau de Vie Cake (water of life), which is a combination of brandy-soaked dried fruit and pecans baked in a whole wheat batter, then brushed with brandy over the next three days.

According to Burns, the bakery prides itself on being part of the Farmington area.

“Our target customers are people in the community, because we’re a community-based bakery,” she said.

The bakery offers a special deal on its popular Old World Bread on Fridays. People ages 55 and older can get their White, Old World, or Wheat bread for $2.25 on Wednesdays.

“We have a lot of good options for people who are trying to eat healthier,” said Burns. “But, we also have delicious treats, good tasting and at reasonable prices.”

The bakery is located at 33250 Grand River Ave. It is open from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
