The commute for Canton shoppers could be shortened to just a few steps with approval of a new outlet mall.

Don’t expect a rehash of what’s available at Tanger Outlets in Howell, Birch Run Premium Outlets in Birch Run and Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills, Paragon Outlet Partners’ Nicholas King told The Observer & Eccentric. The Baltimore-based company is expected break ground next spring on a 357,000-square-foot outlet mall, which could include about 100 stores.

“We try to differentiate ourselves from the existing retail offerings in the market,” King told the newspaper. “We try to bring a unique tenant mix, some products and some brands that aren’t in the area.”

Tell Us:

  • What stores would you like to see at the new outlet mall planned for Canton Township?

If all goes as planned, the mall will open in the summer of 2016 in the Ford Road-Lotz area.

Canton officials expect the outlet mall to boost commerce in Canton Township in much the same way the IKEA store did in 2006

“The kinds of retailers they attract ... we don’t have any of that in the area,” Kristen Thomas, Canton’s economic development manager, told the newspaper. Some possible retailers include Tommy Hilfiger, Nike and Calvin Klein.

Representative of Paragon Outlet Partners were in Canton Monday to meet with prospective tenants. King said he thinks the Detroit area can handle another outlet mall.

I would like to see something built which produces jobs...real jobs. We don't make anything, anymore. We are a consumer nation and often, these days, I find myself wondering how this absence of manufacturing can be sustained. Then I realized, just like every item in your possession reads, "made in China", jobs aren't created in America anymore, they're imported from Asia.

I cannot even begin to fathom why Canton even considered this idea with the traffic problems already known to exist in this area! For years there's been talk about the Ford Road/275/Haggerty traffic disaster, with nothing done to improve it. To significantly add to it seems like an total disregard for safety!

Isn't the Ford Road/275 intersection already the most dangerous intersection with the most serious accidents in the State of Michigan? I remember that report coming out shortly after IKEA was opened. But sure let's add even more traffic flow and problems to an already massively overly congested area, seems totally reasonable (not!). Way to put revenue ahead of citizen safety Canton Township!

I thought many outlet malls were having a problem staying in business and that type of retailing was in decline. Birch Run had several empty spaces last time I was up there a couple of years ago. The outlet just off of I-75 south of Monroe looks almost dead.
